Fizzy Earth

Vinegar and baking soda make this "fizzy" science experiment a fun and educational Earth Day activity for kids of all ages!

Our planet is amazing. It provides everything we need to sustain human life. But because of the emission of greenhouse gases and the excessive use of plastics our planet is in desperate need of repair. We all have to work together every day to improve Mother Earth. Earth Day is just a reminder that it is time for change by recycling, using reusable products and reducing our use of fossil fuels. At ALCOSAN we are doing our part to reduce our carbon footprint. • Gaylord Nelson, a senator in Wisconsin, founded Earth Day in 1970 to raise public consciousness about environmental concerns such as pollution, oil spills, and vanishing wildlife
• Earth is 4.543 billion years old.
• Earth rotates at about 1,000 miles per hour.
• April 22, 2024 will mark the 54th anniversary of Earth Day.
• Around 1 billion people take part in Earth Day activities around the world every year.
• When you combine vinegar and baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) it produces a chemical reaction releasing carbon dioxide gas and causing the mixture to bubble and fizz.

Materials:

• Baking soda
• White vinegar
• Green and blue food coloring
• Pipettes (2)
• Round baking/pie pan
• 2 cups any size
• Stirring spoons or sticks

Procedure:

1. You will need two cups any size.
2. Add 3 tablespoons of vinegar to each cup.
3. Add a few drops of green food coloring to one cup of vinegar and stir.
4. Add a few drops of blue food coloring to the other cup of vinegar and stir.
5. Put a 1 to 2 Centimeter thick layer of baking soda into the bottom of the round tray and spread it out evenly.
6. Use 2 pipettes, one for the green vinegar and the other pipette for the blue vinegar.
7. Squeeze the bulb of the pipette to draw green vinegar from your cup and make the continents by squeezing the green vinegar onto the layer of baking soda.
8. Repeat the last step with the blue vinegar to create the oceans.
9. You should have a fizzy earth once you used both colors.
