The Allegheny County Sanitary Authority (ALCOSAN) has awarded over $11.9 million in Green Revitalization of our Waterways (GROW) grants in the program’s ninth cycle to 24 of our partner municipalities and municipal authorities.

The GROW program, created by ALCOSAN in 2016, helps the municipalities and authorities fund meaningful source control projects that help keep excess water out of the sewer system.

"This GROW cycle illustrates how crucial it is to collaborate towards a shared objective of stopping excess water from getting into our sewer systems,” said Arletta Scott Williams, ALCOSAN’s Executive Director. “We take pride in supporting these effective source control initiatives in our customer municipalities."

ALCOSAN’s GROW program has successfully allocated grants totaling over $74 million for 190 projects over the past nine years. These grants have also facilitated the acquisition of an additional $74 million in funding from municipalities, authorities, and third parties. These projects are poised to significantly reduce overflows into the region’s waterways by more than 237 million gallons per year.

Pennsylvania State Representative Emily Kinkead, who serves as the Vice Chairperson of the ALCOSAN Board of Directors, sees the GROW grants as a positive development for our region. She remarked, “I think it’s impressive that there are so many projects that are being recommended for an award. I think that’s good for our region.”

Municipalities or municipal sewer authorities within the ALCOSAN service area are encouraged to apply for GROW grants. The tenth cycle is currently underway, and ALCOSAN is actively coordinating informational meetings to expertly guide municipalities through the application process.
