June 11, 2018 – Civil, environmental, chemical and mechanical engineering touch nearly every process that occurs at ALCOSAN’s wastewater treatment plant on Pittsburgh’s North Side. And beginning today, students will see and participate in those processes at ALCOSAN’s annual Summer Science Camp.

Always a popular event and completely full this year, the Summer Science Camp is expecting 59 students in grades 4-5 from 48 different schools in Allegheny County who will take part in the two camps beginning June 11 and June 18.

This year, these students will have the opportunity to engage in engineering-based activities, including oil spill cleanup, examination of polymers for slime clean-up, exploring our rivers and bridges on a Just Ducky tour, and building their own bridges using 3-D printers.

During the week of June 25, 39 students in grades 6 through 8 will visit ALCOSAN and also take part in a week of activities focused on engineering, including conducting sewer inspections with robotic cameras and building water-powered cars. This group will also have the opportunity to explore our waterways on a Just Ducky tour.

Finally, on July 9-13, local high school students have an opportunity to explore the science, technology and engineering behind wastewater treatment at ALCOSAN’s annual Clean Water Academy. These students will experience hands-on learning at the University of Pittsburgh’s classrooms and labs and also create a wastewater treatment process model at the Manufacturing Assistance Center located on Susquehanna St. At the end of the week, parents are invited to the view the wastewater models during the gallery walk. These wastewater models will also be featured at ALCOSAN’s open house event on September 15. Interested students should contact ALCOSAN’s Scholastic Outreach Department at cwa@alcosan.org.
