ALCOSAN Public Hearing to Discuss CAP Program

Nov 5, 2015, 9:16 AM

November 5, 2015 – The Allegheny County Sanitary Authority will hold a public meeting on Monday, November 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the Gold Room of the Allegheny County Courthouse to hear citizens’ views and ideas on a Customer Assistance Program (CAP) for low income ratepayers in the ALCOSAN service territory. This hearing, “Clean Water and Low Income Families,” will provide an opportunity for public discussion of the impact of increasing rates on the region.

The Pittsburgh region is required by federal and state law to invest in improving the regional system for collecting and treating sewage. With no public money available, paying for these improvements must be incorporated in sewage bills. ALCOSAN is developing a comprehensive program to ease the burden of low income sewage customers as these increases take effect.

Members of ALCOSAN’s Board of Directors and staff will preside over the public hearings, including Board Chair and County Treasurer John Weinstein; CAP Subcommittee Chair and Executive Director of Economic Development South Gregory Jones; Pittsburgh City Councilmember Corey O’Connor; ALCOSAN Executive Director Arletta Scott Williams; and Director of Finance William Inks.

Chair Weinstein urged citizens to attend, “We hope that citizens will take advantage of this opportunity to be part of the process at this free and open public hearing. We are interested in hearing how a Customer Assistance Program (CAP) would impact individuals and families, and hope everyone will share ideas for ALCOSAN’s program.”

Weinstein continued, “By working together, we can make clean and healthy rivers and streams a reality for all Western Pennsylvania families, while protecting seniors and other low income citizens from extraordinary costs.”
