Watercolor Butterflies
Are you looking for a fun, easy way to craft with your kids at home?
…Look no further!
Check out these WATERCOLOR BUTTERFLIES!
Fun Facts:
All living things need clean water to survive; Butterflies live on land, but they still need clean water.
Scientists who study insects that live in the water look for butterflies on land.
When they see lots of butterflies on land, they know the water is clean.
Butterflies and all other insects need clean water in all stages of their lives from egg to adult.
We call the changes they go through metamorphosis (their life cycle).
Materials:
Coffee Filters (2-3)
Clothespins (2-3)
Pipe Cleaners (2-3)
Spray bottle with water
Paper towels
Washable, kid-friendly markers
Tray/Something to put craft on when drying
*Some adult assistance might be needed throughout.
Procedures:
Use the markers to color on the coffee filter—however you’d like to!
Once finished, spray it with a spray bottle to ensure the color is moving. It does not need to be soaking wet, but make sure you spray it all.
Allow it to dry for about 5-7 minutes. While waiting, you could always read “A Very Hungry Caterpillar”!
Once it is dry, bunch it up in the middle and put the clothespin down the middle to hold it.
Add a face to the clothespin.
Cut (and even twist) the pipe cleaners and add them to the middle of the clothespin to hold it. If it doesn’t stay to your liking, you may tape or glue if you choose to.
Extensions:
Tie the butterfly back to the book “A Very Hungry Caterpillar”. If you did not have time to read it, read it to the children at the end.
Have the children create an environment for the butterfly to live in and create sentences.
If you have access to technology, look up educational videos on butterflies.
