The Dirty Truth About Dog Waste: It’s Not Just an Eyesore, It’s an Environmental Headache

Pet waste left on the ground can wash into storm drains and contaminate our rivers and streams with bacteria and parasites. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, pet waste is a significant cause of water body contamination, especially in areas where there are high concentrations of dogs, like right here in Allegheny County.

“Natural” Isn’t Always Healthy

Dog waste doesn’t simply decompose on its own. Unlike wild animals, external factors drastically alter the composition of domestic dog feces, such as medications and processed foods. Because of this, dog waste is full of fats, proteins, and other nutrients that make their waste highly concentrated with bacteria and nitrogen, among other byproducts that are disruptive to the ecosystem.

Poo-lluted Waterways are No Laughing Matter

Decaying pet waste consumes oxygen and releases ammonia. Low oxygen levels and ammonia can damage the health of fish and other aquatic life. Additionally, it contains nutrients that promote weed and algae growth, which makes swimming and recreation unappealing or even unhealthy.  Pet waste also carries bacteria, viruses, and parasites that can threaten the health of humans and wildlife.

What You Can Do to Make a Difference

Fortunately, the answer is simple. Protecting our waterways from harmful pet waste is as easy as snagging it and bagging it in biodegradable bags that can be thrown into any trash can. Take the PUPS Pledge below to commit to doing your part to keep our waterways clean!
