have
taken place in the region over the last 50 years. Pittsburgh,
once known as the "smoky city", has established
itself as a center for high technology. Another remarkable
change is the transformation of area rivers and streams
from open sewers to waterways safe for recreation and commerce.
The Allegheny County Sanitary Authority continues to operate
on the same premise it was founded on in 1946 - to
provide environmentally sound wastewater collection and
treatment. And while ALCOSAN was originally
designed to address water pollution, its environmental scope
has grown to include two other precious commodities - our
land and our air.
ALCOSAN's forefathers lead by Founder, former Executive
Director and Chairman of the Board, John F. Laboon, tackled
the issue of stream abatement with years of engineering,
laboratory and financial studies. But perhaps the largest
part of ALCOSAN's success is the dedication of its employees to the plant's mission
throughout the years.
ALCOSAN's employees take pride in the accomplishments that
have taken place during the past 50 years and ALCOSAN's
future holds great promise as well. Utilization of advanced
wastewater technology will carry the Pittsburgh region into
the 21st century.
As a result, Pittsburgh and its neighboring communities
will continue to benefit from strong economic development,
recreational activities and a thriving aquatic and plant
life environment along the three rivers.
