ALCOSAN currently employs 300 people. Approximately sixty of these employees are salaried including Directors, Managers, First Line Supervisors and some professionals such as Engineers. The Security Department consists of about seven guards who are members of the General Teamsters, Chauffeurs & Helpers Local 249. The rest of ALCOSAN's workforce (about 230 employees) are members of the Utility Workers Union of America Local 433. The Utility Workers perform jobs in plant operations and maintenance. They also perform office and clerical work and some professional jobs such as Chemists and Information Systems positions. Most of ALCOSAN's employees work Monday through Friday. Operations Department personnel (about 60 senior employees) and Security work a rotating shift schedule.

 


Turnover at ALCOSAN has historically been low. On average ten to fifteen new employees are hired per year mostly for entry level plant or office positions. Hundreds of applications are received each year.
General Requirements: To be considered for employment at ALCOSAN you must be at least 18 years of age and must be a resident of ALCOSAN's service area (Most of Allegheny County) or agree to move into the service area within 90 days of employment. In addition you must have a high school diploma or have completed a GED.



1. Entry Level Plant - General Maintenance Laborer. Performs general clean up, grounds maintenance and material handling duties. Must pass pre-placement physical which includes lifting test (68 pounds). Duties include climbing into and out of confined spaces such as sewers. Must pass four hour battery of tests which measure overall suitability and ability to advance to plant operations or skilled maintenance.

2. Entry Level Office - Utility Processor. Performs data entry and other clerical duties.
Current Must pass typing test (40 words per minute). Must also pass four hour battery of tests which measure overall suitability and ability to advance to higher level clerical positions.

3. Other Positions - Most higher level positions are filled by internal posting and promotion. Skilled trades positions are normally filled internally through our apprenticeship program. Occasionally we will seek external candidates for positions such as: Information Systems Professionals, Engineers, Chemists, Instrument Repair Technicians and specialized management positions. Such vacancies are listed with the State Employment Service and are advertised in local newspapers when they occur.



You can apply for employment with ALCOSAN by completing an employment application at our Human Resources Department during normal business hours (8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). Applications are not mailed out. However, resumes are accepted by mail or fax 412-734-8713. Applications and resumes are retained for a period of one year. When vacancies occur they are listed with the Pennsylvania State Job Service. Vacancies other than entry level are also advertised in the local newspapers. When vacancies occur, applications are screened and applicants are selected to be interviewed based on factors such as apparent qualifications and stable work history. Testing is required for entry level positions. A suitable number of applicants will be selected for testing based on the results of the interview. Those applicants who pass the test battery will be requested to provide detailed information so that the Authority can verify work history and education prior to employment. If more applicants pass the test than are required to fill the current vacancies the applicants who are not initially selected will be given first consideration for future vacancies.
