Learn the necessary and important steps ALCOSAN is taking to address sewer overflows as part of the Clean Water Plan.

ALCOSAN’S MAD SCIENTIST: “BUGGY SCIENCE”     All Day
The Mad Scientist explains the buggy biology of ALCOSAN’s secondary treatment process and his assistants will help you to identify various microorganisms by looking at samples of activated sludge through a microscope. (Approximately 45 minutes)

ALLEGHENY CLEANWAYS     All Day

NEW CLEAN WATER ACADEMY PROJECT     All Day
See sustainable designs for a park located on the CMU “Donner Ditch” campus. Projects were constructed by high school students who attended ALCOSAN’s 2019 Clean Water Academy.

CLIMATE AND URBAN SYSTEMS PARTNERSHIP (CUSP)     All Day
Enter the “Climate Change Playground” for several hands-on activities relating to climate change in urban areas. Exhibiting partners:

CREEK CONNECTIONS, ALLEGHENY COLLEGE     All Day

DOWNSPOUT DISCONNECT     All Day
Learn the basics on how to disconnect your downspout into a rain garden or rain barrel. See the tools and materials needed and a variety of rain garden plants.

Play ALCOSAN’s environmental quiz game that is flush with excitement!

NEW EXTRA CREDIT ACTIVITY K-5     All Day
Students will use the binary code system to spell their name with beads for a bracelet or necklace they will make. Extra Credit: Elementary Students

NEW EXTRA CREDIT ACTIVITY 6-12     All Day
Students will learn how engineers design moving objects to control friction then use these principles to make a hovercraft. Students will also challenge others to build the tallest tower they can with a limited amount of blocks. Extra Credit: Middle and High School Students

FISHING POND     All Day
How does litter enter a sewer pipe but end up in the river? “Fish” pollution out and win a prize for helping to clean our environment. Great activity for younger children.

FRANKIE’S KIDDIE COVE     All Day
Children ages 5 and younger can explore interactive play zones such as Connect Four Frankies, baby shark hat craft, duck pond and more. Adults must remain with their child at all times.

FRIENDS OF THE RIVERFRONT     All Day

FUTURE PLUMBERS’ WATERWORKS     All Day
Kids 8 years of age and younger can explore the hydraulics of water pressure and flow in a plumbing water activity guaranteed to make a splash!

GREEN REVITALIZATION OF OUR WATERWAYS (GROW)     All Day
Learn about ALCOSAN’s municipal grant program to help fund source control projects throughout the service area. Interact with staff and see displays of specific projects and a green infrastructure model.

INTERCEPTOR MAINTENANCE     All Day
Check out the high pressure water and vacuum truck that is used to clean the sewer lines in the interceptor system. See how video equipment is used to locate obstructions in the line and walk through a simulated sewer pipe.

INTRODUCTION TO REPTILES AND AMPHIBIANS OF PENNSYLVANIA  
Presentations at 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
Naturalist April Claus introduces reptiles and amphibians of Pennsylvania and the important role these animals play in our local ecosystem. Identify frogs and toads by their call, find out where salamanders hide, examine touchable models of turtles, learn how to identify poisonous snakes and see live snakes, toads, turtles and salamanders native to the area. (40 minutes)

JENNINGS ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION CENTER     All Day
See the evolution of the Jennings prairie from ice and craft a rattlesnake to take home. For more information: jenningssp@pa.gov

PROTECTING REPTILES AND AMPHIBIANS IN YOUR WATERSHED

Have you ever wondered what slimy and scaly creatures reside in our watershed? What species live here now and which ones used to? Where and when can these hidden creatures be found? The Awesome Spirit of Wildlife, Inc. (TASOW) presents “Reptiles and Amphibians of Our Watershed,” an interactive presentation that lets you meet some intriguing special guests up close. (40 minutes)

Find out how your dog (and you) can make our rivers and streams cleaner and healthier. Sign the pledge to Pick Up Poop and get a great gift for your dog!

NEW RAINY DAY FLOW THROW     All Day
Learn four ways to control rainy day overflows and toss beanbags into your selected method. See if you can hit the target!

RECYCLING WASTEWATER BYPRODUCTS     All Day
Learn about the byproducts generated from the wastewater treatment process, including how ALCOSAN recycles its biosolids (called ALCOSOIL) and ash. Take some wildflower seeds and compost to plant at home. Students in grades 5 and above can learn the benefits of adding organic matter to the soil in a 15-minute, hands-on activity conducted on every hour.

REGIONALIZATION     All Day
Use the “Flush It” app to track your flow, see common sewer defects and how to repair them, and learn about ALCOSAN’s regionalization project. Kids can locate sewers and dig them up in a sandbox.

RESOURCE CENTER     All Day
Stop by for information and activity books about wastewater treatment, sewer overflows, household hazardous waste, ALCOSAN and more. Register to receive alerts from ALCOSAN’s river advisory program. 

“SCIENCE ROCKS”    All Day

UTILITY WORKERS OF AMERICA LOCAL 433     All Day
Local 433 represents 288 ALCOSAN employees in various trades. Stop by the booth to speak with union representatives, operate the simulated primary treatment tank or disassemble and reassemble a flight (mechanical maintenance).

VENTURE OUTDOORS     All Day
